How to Make TunesKit Work with iTunes 12.6 on Mac

Mac users of TunesKit DRM removal tools, including the DRM Media Converter, Audiobook Converter, and Apple Music Converter, would encounter the conversion failure when running the software with the latest iTunes 12.6 on Mac OS X 10.11 or macOS 10.12. But please don’t worry. Here we’ll provide you with two solutions to make TunesKit work again under iTunes 12.6 as before.

Solution 1. Disable System Integrity Protection on Mac

Ever since Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan, Apple has introduced System Integrity Protection, known as SIP. TunesKit won’t work properly with SIP enabled on the Mac where iTunes 12.6 installed. This method just shows you how to configure your machine by partially disabling the SIP setting so that you can run TunesKit successfully with iTunes 12.6 on your Mac.

1. Boot into Recovery OS

recovery os

Simply restart your Mac machine. Hold COMMAND + R until the Apple logo appears. Then select Terminal from the Utilities menu.

2. Partially disable SIP

turn off SIP

In the popup window it opens, please type csrutil enable –without debug and press Return. Then the part of SIP that TunesKit runs will be turned off.

3. Restart Mac and run TunesKit

Now input reboot and press Return to restart your Mac. Once restarted, you can install TunesKit again on your machine so that you can use it to convert iTunes movies, or Apple Music, or audiobooks as before without any problem.

Note: Please be well noted that this only disables the part of the SIP function that TunesKit needs to run on your Mac, so your machine is still being protected. You can enter csrutil status and press Return in Terminal to check the SIP status and you’ll find it’s still enabled, see below:

sip enabled

But if you are still considering about the security issue, you can also enable the System Integrity Protection again once you complete the conversion with TunesKit by following the guide below.

Tips: How to Enable SIP Again?

To enable the System Integrity Protection again, you can simply quite TunesKit, then boot into the Recovery OS as mentioned in the first step. In the pop-up window, type csrutil clear and press Return. Then type reboot and press Return to restart your machine.

Solution 2. Downgrade iTunes 12.6 to iTunes 12.5 or lower

If you don’t want to turn off the SIP setting on your Mac, then the other option to make TunesKit work again on your Mac is downgrading your iTunes 12.6 to 12.5. But the problem is, unlike Windows, iTunes comes preinstalled as part of OS X, and is considered “required” software by operating system. So you can’t simply drag the iTunes app to Trash for uninstallation. Please don’t worry. You can simply follow these steps to learn how to completely uninstall iTunes 12.6 and reinstall iTunes 12.5.

1. Uninstall iTunes 12.6

uninstall itunes 12.6

Firstly navigate to the Applications folder and find the iTunes app file (/Applications/iTunes.app). Right-click (or Control-click) on iTunes and select Get Info. Locate and click on the padlock icon on the bottom right side of the window and enter your admin password.

Expand the Sharing & Permissions section of the window if it’s not already visible and change the privileges for “everyone” to Read & Write. Then close the Get Info window and try again to drag the iTunes application file to the Trash.

Tips: This won’t affect your iTunes library file or your actual iTunes media, both of which are stored outside of the application file we deleted. This means that if you later reinstall iTunes, you can point it to your old iTunes library and pick up right where you left off.

2. Install iTunes 12.5

You can download the previous iTunes 12.5 in some software download sites, such as iPhonefirmware.com. Then install it on your Mac. Please note that the older version of iTunes may not recognize your iTunes library in iTunes 12.6. You need to reload the iTunes library later.

3. Reload iTunes library

replace itunes library

Go to your home directory > Music > iTunes and find the file named iTunes Library.itl. You can rename it or just delete it. Then go to the folder of Previous iTunes Libraries in the same directory, and find the most recent iTunes Library.itl and copy the specific file to the iTunes folder by removing the date info from the file name.

4. Turn off iTunes automatic upgrade

Relaunch iTunes, go to menu bar and choose iTunes > Preferences > Advanced. Disable the Check for new software updates automatically option and then click OK to save the setting.

That’s it. Then you can use TunesKit again on your Mac as smoothly as before.

How to Share Your Purchased iTunes Content to Others

If you and your family members are using different iTunes accounts for purchasing digital content from iTunes Store, you may meet the problem that you can’t share your purchases without family sharing. But the downside of the family sharing is that it only supports 6 person in total to share the iTunes purchases. What’s worse, it’s also known that one single iTunes account (or Apple ID) can only authorize up to 5 computers. What if you want to share the iTunes purchases on the sixth machine or more?

Don’t worry. If you are just facing this kind of problem, simply read on the following guide, from which you’ll find the two best ways to share your iTunes purchased content, including movies, TV shows, audiobooks, iBooks, Apple Music to others with a few steps only.

Method 1. Share Purchased iTunes Media with Others via Family Sharing

If you have less than 6 people to share the iTunes purchases with, then you are recommended to use iTunes Family Sharing to share the iTunes content. It lets you add up to six family members. Once added, all members will get instant access to each other’s purchase and can view and download them on demand just as you already can from your own account. Family Sharing works in the iTunes store, iOS App Store, and the Mac App Store, so you can share content across all of your devices. Besides, with Family Sharing, you don’t have to share your passwords with each other, but must use one credit card for all devices.

How to Set Up Family Sharing to Share iTunes Purchases on Mac

Note: Family Sharing only works on Mac OS X Yosemite or later.

Step 1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.

Step 2. Click Manage Family.

Step 3. Click your name and review your account information next to Family Purchases.

Step 4. Make sure that Share my purchases is selected.

After you join a family, you can see and download items from each family member’s purchase history, and enjoy them on your own devices. You can download music, movies, TV shows, and books on up to 10 of your devices, five of which can be computers. You can download apps to any devices that you own or control.

Method 2. Share iTunes Purchases with Others by using iTunes DRM Removal Tools

This could be the best option if you need to share the iTunes purchased media to unlimited number of persons or computers. It helps you get rid of the DRM protection from all the protected iTunes content so that you can freely share the files to others as you like. Here we are talking about TunesKit DRM removal solutions, which will help you permanently remove DRM from all kinds of iTunes media, including iTunes movies, TV episodes, audiobooks, ebooks, songs, etc.

How to Remove DRM from iTunes Music

itunes-music-converter.jpg

As you know, Apple dropped the DRM encryption from its iTunes  M4P music tracks in 2009. But the problem is that the songs you purchased before the year of 2009 were still locked by the FairPlay DRM and you can’t freely play them on your non-Apple devices. So have you ever thought about stripping off the DRM from the iTunes music? If so, you should follow these two solutions as below to learn how to easily remove DRM from iTunes music.

Burn iTunes M4P Songs to CD/DVD

The good news is that although Apple doesn’t let you convert DRM-protected iTunes music to MP3, it lets you burn them to a CD. So here the first way to remove DRM from your iTunes songs is to burn the M4P tracks to DVD or CD disc.

1. Create music playlist in iTunes

Insert a blank CD or DVD disc in the drive and open iTunes on your computer. Select the File > New Playlist option. Add a name to the new playlist.

2. Add iTunes songs to playlist

Now select all the iTunes M4P music files that you want to remove DRM from and drag them to the playlist that you just created.

3. Burn iTunes music to CD

Once the tracks are imported to the iTunes playlist, right-click the playlist and select the option “Burn playlist to Disc”. iTunes will now present you a dialogue box where you can select the kind of CD/DVD that you want to burn. Make sure you select the Audio CD option. Then iTunes will start burning the iTunes music to the CD automatically.

4. Import iTunes songs from CD/ DVD

The final step is to rip the songs that you burned onto audio CD, back to digital music files. Simply open iTunes, select the Edit > Preferences > General tab, click on Import Settings. To start ripping the audio CD, you should insert it into your CD drive on your computer and click the Yes button to start.

Wait for a while till the ripping finishes. Now all the files that have been imported into your music library will be free from DRM so that you can transfer them to any MP3 device for playback.

Note: The downside of using this method is that iTunes only lets you burn the same song once. Besides, if you have a lot of music files to burn, it will take a rather long time to finish the whole process. So if you have the need to convert a large amount of iTunes songs for more than once, you’d better use a legal DRM removal tool as mentioned in the following method.

Convert DRM-protected iTunes Music to MP3

The other common way to remove DRM from iTunes M4P is using a third-party DRM removal tool for iTunes. With this method, you can completely and permanently bypass the DRM lock from iTunes songs so that you can transfer the files to any devices at anytime without limit.

select-output-format-apple-music

iTunes DRM Removal: How to Remove DRM Lock from iTunes Media

remove-drm-itunes.jpg

How would you describe Apple’s ecosystem, especially the iTunes ecosystem? Doesn’t it like that Apple has lured users into a trap using design or marketing, shut the door behind them and thrown away the key? Generally speaking, this kind of ecosystem lock-in essentially doesn’t allow the customer to take the content and move to another platform. To be specifically, this can be achieved by limiting a device’s file format compatibility, or by limiting the ways in which a device can be loaded with content.

Apple’s Ecosystem Lock-in: iTunes Music, Video, and Books

Before January 6, 2009, audio files sold in iTunes Store were protected using Apple’s own FairPlay DRM solution. As of today, all music sold in the iTunes Store after April 7, 2009, is DRM free while Apple put the DRM back to the songs in its newly released music streaming service, Apple Music. Currently, all video content, including movies, TV shows, and music videos sold through iTunes is DRM protected and can only be played on devices compatible with the FairPlay DRM. With iBooks, Apple offers both copy protected books as well as books without DRM on its iOS devices. In the case of audiobooks, they are generally offered in file formats, such as M4A or M4B, with embedded DRM protection.

Those facts portray a gloomy situation we have to face, that is, several types of content available for purchase in iTunes are subject to ecosystem lock-in, where we as users are prohibited from dealing with the purchased items in ways we like. That’s not the end of the story, however. There are of course methods to strip DRM from iTunes media content, such as the ones introduced in the following article.

Bypass DRM Encryption from Offline Apple Music M4P Songs

If you are subscribing Apple Music streaming service or have a large collection of iTunes music files purchased before 2009, you may have the need to move away from Apple ecosystem by transferring those DRM-restricted songs to non-Apple platforms. In such a case, you are here to meet TunesKit DRM M4P Converter, a perfect DRM removal solution developed to completely remove DRM from offline Apple Music M4P songs, as well as the old iTunes music purchases protected by DRM. It’s designed to free the M4P audio from DRM by converting the copy-protected songs to common MP3, AAC, M4A, FLAC, WAV, and M4B with original ID tags preserved. If you own any mac machine running OS X 10.8 or later, you should install the TunesKit M4P Converter for Mac.

Besides, it supports lossless audio output quality and works at up to 100X faster speed.

When talking about innovation, TunesKit iBook Copy for Mac is the other outstanding member among TunesKit DRM removal products line. It’s the unique DRM cracker for Apple iBooks eBooks developed to bypass DRM restriction from ePub files purchased from iBooks Store while keeping the metadata info, including book author, publish date, cover, etc. so that iBook users can freely enjoy the books on non-Apple eReaders, like Kindle, Kobo, etc.
